Acer platanoides Globosum

Acer platanoides Globosum, commonly known as the Norway maple 'Globosum', is a compact deciduous tree with a naturally rounded, dense crown. Its glossy green leaves provide a lush canopy in Spring and Summer, turning a vibrant yellow in Autumn. This low-maintenance tree is grafted onto a straight trunk, giving it a uniform lollipop-like shape, making it ideal for formal gardens or urban spaces.

Perfect for small gardens, courtyard plantings, or as an ornamental street tree. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and moderately dry conditions, provided they are well-drained. Resistant to pollution, it is an excellent choice for urban environments. Allow approximately 3–4 metres spacing for its neat, symmetrical growth.

Reaches a mature height of 4–6 metres with a rounded crown spanning 3–4 metres, forming a tidy, spherical silhouette.

  • Trimming: Prune acers in late winter or early spring to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as acers have a natural, graceful form.
  • Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees and shrubs in spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which may encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of the plant's natural form.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Pest Control: Look out for aphids and scale insects. Remove them by hand, use insecticidal soap, or introduce natural predators like ladybirds.
  • Disease Management: Watch for verticillium wilt, indicated by wilting leaves and branch dieback. Remove affected branches promptly and dispose of them away from healthy plants. Improve soil drainage to reduce risks.
