Acer Mikawa Yatsubusa

Acer palmatum Mikawa Yatsubusa is a stunning, compact deciduous Japanese maple renowned for its unique foliage and dense, layered growth habit. In spring, the small, deeply lobed leaves emerge bright green with a delicate red edge, creating a beautiful contrast. Throughout the summer, the leaves maintain their vibrant green hue before turning brilliant shades of red and orange in autumn. This slow-growing tree is ideal for small gardens, patios, and containers, as well as a focal point in mixed borders or rock gardens.

Acer palmatum Mikawa Yatsubusa thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location, preferring well-drained, fertile soil with consistent moisture. It adapts well to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and benefits from protection against harsh winds and intense afternoon sun. Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry spells, to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Planting with adequate spacing of about 1-2 metres between trees allows for proper air circulation and growth.

At maturity, Acer palmatum Mikawa Yatsubusa reaches a height of approximately 1-1.5 metres and a spread of about 1-1.5 metres, forming a compact, rounded canopy.

Trimming: Prune in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the natural shape, particularly for ornamental varieties like Japanese maples.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees or a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leggy growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during dry spells, especially for shallow-rooted varieties like Japanese maples. Use mulch to retain moisture.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of verticillium wilt (wilting and yellowing leaves) and leaf spot diseases. Remove affected branches and ensure good drainage. Dispose of infected material to prevent the spread of disease.
