Acer palmatum Hogyoku is a hardy, upright Japanese maple admired for its fresh green, deeply lobed leaves that transform into a brilliant pumpkin-orange in mid to late autumn. With a naturally rounded form and clean branching structure, it offers strong seasonal contrast and elegant shape throughout the year. Typically reaching 4-5 metres high and 3-4 metres wide, it makes a stunning feature tree in woodland, courtyard, or Japanese-style gardens.
Plant in a sheltered position with dappled shade or morning sun and protection from harsh wind. Prefers moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Space away from competing roots or structures to allow for its mature spread. Mulch annually to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Minimal pruning is needed-remove dead or crossing branches in late winter to maintain form. Avoid hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or mid-summer (when sap flow is reduced) to shape the tree and remove any dead, crossing, or overcrowded branches. Avoid heavy pruning, especially in spring, to prevent stress and sap bleeding.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this ornamental tree is valued for its foliage rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring before new growth begins. In poor soils, a light top-up in midsummer can support healthy foliage and structure, but avoid overfeeding to prevent weak, leggy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. ‘Hogyoku’ prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Use mulch to retain soil moisture and protect the shallow roots, but keep mulch clear of the trunk.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and scale may occasionally appear. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of leaf spot and verticillium wilt. Avoid waterlogged soils, which can contribute to root problems. Remove any diseased or dying foliage promptly and avoid overhead watering.
