Acer griseum, commonly known as the Paperbark Maple, is a stunning deciduous tree admired for its cinnamon-coloured, peeling bark, which adds texture and year-round interest. The trifoliate leaves are dark green above and silvery beneath, turning vibrant shades of orange and red in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal display. Its compact size and ornamental features make it a standout in any garden.
Perfect for woodland gardens, mixed borders, or as a specimen tree where its distinctive bark and autumn colour can be showcased.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of a range of soil types and is relatively low-maintenance once established.
Reaches a mature height of 6–9 m with a spread of 4–6 m, forming a compact, rounded canopy ideal for smaller spaces or as a focal point in larger landscapes.
What is a bare-rooted tree?
Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.
What are the benefits?
Trimming: Prune in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the natural shape, particularly for ornamental varieties like Japanese maples.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees or a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leggy growth.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during dry spells, especially for shallow-rooted varieties like Japanese maples. Use mulch to retain moisture.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of verticillium wilt (wilting and yellowing leaves) and leaf spot diseases. Remove affected branches and ensure good drainage. Dispose of infected material to prevent the spread of disease.
