Zamia furfuracea is a slow-growing, evergreen cycad with a low, spreading habit and thick, leathery green leaves arranged in a rosette. Often called the cardboard palm, it adds a strong textural element to subtropical, coastal, or low-maintenance gardens, and also suits containers in sheltered spaces.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and prefers a warm, frost-free position. Water occasionally during extended dry periods and avoid overwatering. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart to allow for mature spread.
Grows to around 60 to 90 centimetres tall and 1 to 1.2 metres wide.
Trimming: Remove yellowing or damaged fronds at the base to keep the plant tidy. Avoid cutting healthy growth, as this plant is slow to replace removed foliage.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as it is grown for its foliage. Cones may appear but do not require removal unless unwanted.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for palms or cycads in spring and mid-summer. Avoid high-nitrogen blends to prevent weak growth.
Watering: Water deeply during establishment and allow the top of the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for scale and mealybugs, particularly in indoor or sheltered conditions. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Avoid overwatering and remove any spotted or yellowing leaves promptly. Maintain good airflow, especially in humid conditions, to minimise fungal issues.
