Westringia Grey Box

Westringia Grey Box. provides great colour contrast with small white flowers emerging in spring and covering the fine silvery foliage. Excellent for living sculptural forms in your gardens or as a low, bordering plant. Also very smart clipped in containers. Great as a hedge or left unpruned in its natural ball shape.

Trimming: Westringia ‘Grey Box’ naturally forms a neat, compact ball, so only light trimming is usually needed to maintain shape. Clip after the main flowering flush or as required to keep it tidy, and avoid cutting hard into old wood.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not usually necessary, as this shrub is typically grown for its tidy grey foliage and overall form rather than for prolonged flower display. A light overall tidy after flowering is generally sufficient.

Fertilising: Westringia ‘Grey Box’ needs very little feeding. Apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus or balanced fertiliser in spring if growth is weak, but avoid heavy feeding as Westringia generally performs well in lean soils.

Watering: Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then reduce to occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Once established, it is drought tolerant, but it must have good drainage and should not stay wet for long periods.

Pest control: Westringia is generally very low in pest problems. Keep an eye on stressed plants for the usual sap-sucking insects such as scale or aphids, and treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed. Good airflow and avoiding overwatering will help keep plants robust. This pest guidance is partly inferred from general shrub care, as cultivar-specific pest issues for ‘Grey Box’ are not commonly highlighted by growers.

Disease management: Disease issues are uncommon, but poor drainage and prolonged wet conditions can lead to decline, dieback or root problems. Watch for thinning growth, browning from the base, or a plant that stays dull and weak despite watering; improve drainage, remove affected growth, and avoid overhead or excessive watering.
