Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as Bird of Paradise, is a bold, evergreen perennial prized for its striking orange and blue flowers that resemble a bird in flight. Flowering mainly from late winter through to spring, and intermittently in warm conditions, it also features large, paddle-shaped green leaves that add strong architectural form to subtropical and modern gardens.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with rich, free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost, wind, and coastal conditions once established. Water during dry periods and feed in spring and summer for best flowering. Remove spent flower stems and old leaves to maintain appearance. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart.
Grows to around 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall and wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems and any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy. In early spring, cut back older foliage to encourage fresh growth.
Deadheading: Remove faded flowers at the base to improve appearance and encourage further flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. During the growing season, feed every four to six weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to support strong flowering and lush foliage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry spells. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but thrives with consistent moisture. Ensure soil is well drained to prevent waterlogging.
Pest Control: Watch for scale, aphids, and mealybugs, especially at the base of leaves. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues. Use well-draining soil and remove any diseased or rotting foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
