Rhododendron Bumblebee
Notify MeRhododendron Bumblebee is a hybrid evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. It produces showy, funnel-shaped flowers with shades of purple with a purple-black central eye. The plant can grow up to 1.5m in height and width, and it prefers to grow in acidic, well-drained soil in partial shade. Rhododendron Bumblebee is a popular plant for adding colour and texture to gardens, often used as a focal point or as part of a mixed border. Regular pruning is required to maintain its shape and encourage new growth, and it is relatively low-maintenance once established.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches at any time of year. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce next season's flowers.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly by snapping off the flower head just above the first set of leaves. This helps direct energy towards new growth and next year’s flowers.
Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilisers with high nitrogen content, which can promote foliage over flowers.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods and the establishment phase. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as lace bugs, spider mites, and aphids. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to treat infestations.
Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of root rot, powdery mildew, and leaf spot. Powdery mildew appears as a white coating on leaves and can be treated with fungicides. Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to minimise disease risk. Avoid overhead watering and improve soil drainage to prevent root rot. Remove and dispose of any infected leaves to prevent the spread of disease.
