Rhaphiolepis Oriental Pearl is a low maintenance, evergreen. Is drought tolerant, frost tolerant and can take front line exposure. It will grow in most soil types but prefers moist, well-drained soil. A compact, low/slow growing evergreen shrub. It makes a fantastic little rounded hedge, garden filler or can be grown in a pot for a sunny balcony.

Trimming: Rhaphiolepis ‘Oriental Pearl’ is naturally dense and rounded, so it needs very little trimming; lightly shape after flowering and remove any dead, damaged or wayward growth to keep it tidy.

Deadheading: Deadheading is usually not necessary, as this shrub is generally grown for its overall shape and mass of white flowering rather than for repeat flower removal. A light tidy after the main flowering flush is enough.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy foliage and flowering; avoid overdoing high-nitrogen feeds, which can push soft leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Water in after feeding.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist while the plant is establishing, then reduce to occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant, but it performs best in free-draining soil and dislikes staying wet.

Pest control: Rhaphiolepis is generally low maintenance, but check new growth for aphids and stems or leaf undersides for scale insects. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, and improve airflow if growth is crowded.

Disease management: The main issue to watch for is fungal leaf spot, especially Entomosporium leaf spot. Look for small red, purple or brown spots on leaves, premature leaf drop, and a thinning appearance. Remove affected leaves, avoid overhead watering, keep the plant open and airy, and use a suitable fungicide only if the problem persists.
