Rhaphiolepis Fergusonii

Rhaphiolepis Fergusonii is a hardy, evergreen shrub known for its dense growth habit, dark green leathery foliage, and soft pink flowers that appear from mid to late spring. The flowers are followed by small ornamental berries, while the compact form makes it an excellent low-maintenance option for structured planting.

Ideal for coastal, formal, and low-maintenance gardens, Rhaphiolepis Fergusonii is perfect for hedging, borders, or foundation planting. It performs best in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and is tolerant of drought, wind, and coastal conditions once established. Space approximately 60 to 80 cm apart for hedging.

Forms a dense, rounded shrub reaching around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and wide.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. For hedging or formal planting, clip annually in late summer or early autumn.

Deadheading: Not necessary, as this plant is self-cleaning, but removing spent flower clusters can enhance appearance if desired.

Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy foliage and flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-draining soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally watch for scale or aphids on new growth. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if required.

Disease Management: Can be susceptible to leaf spot in humid conditions. Improve air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering. Remove any affected foliage promptly and dispose of it to prevent spread. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
