Olearia macrodonta, commonly known as mountain daisy or New Zealand holly, is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It features distinctive, holly-like grey-green leaves with creamy white margins and clusters of small, white, daisy-like flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. With its dense, upright habit and attractive foliage, it makes a striking specimen or screening plant in native, coastal, or low-maintenance garden styles. Typically reaches 3-6 metres high and 2-3 metres wide.

Best grown in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Highly tolerant of wind, cold, and salt-laden coastal air, making it well suited to exposed sites. Space plants 1.5-2.5 metres apart for shelter planting or informal hedging. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and promote bushiness.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. If grown as a hedge, trim annually in late summer or early autumn. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as recovery may be slow.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads after flowering can improve appearance and reduce self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer may be beneficial.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Olearia macrodonta is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or scale insects may appear-treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good air circulation and well-drained soil to prevent fungal issues. Remove any dead or diseased wood promptly to maintain plant health.
