Olearia lineata
Notify MeOlearia lineata is a fine-textured, evergreen New Zealand native shrub valued for its slender, grey-green leaves and airy, upright form. Small, daisy-like white flowers may appear in late spring to early summer, adding subtle seasonal interest. Its delicate foliage and graceful habit make it ideal for use as a screen, background plant, or informal hedge in native, coastal, or low-maintenance gardens. Typically grows 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide.
Thrives in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil and is highly tolerant of wind, salt spray, and dry conditions once established. Space plants 1-1.5 metres apart for screening or hedging. Prune lightly to shape and maintain density, particularly in early spring. Responds well to regular trimming if a more formal look is desired.
Trimming: Trim lightly in late spring or early autumn to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. If grown as a hedge, clip regularly to keep a tidy form. Avoid cutting into old wood, as regrowth may be slow.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as it is grown primarily for its fine-textured foliage rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer may be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Olearia lineata is drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear on soft new growth-treat with insecticidal soap if required.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure well-drained soil and good air circulation to prevent root or foliage issues. Remove any dead or discoloured material promptly.
