Murraya paniculata

Murraya paniculata is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub prized for its glossy green foliage and clusters of highly fragrant white flowers that appear from Spring through to Autumn. Often referred to as Orange Jasmine or Mock Orange, its citrus-scented flowers are followed by small red berries, adding ornamental value and attracting birds.

Ideal for formal, tropical, or contemporary garden styles, Murraya paniculata is perfect for hedging, screening, or feature planting. It thrives in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil and responds well to regular pruning to maintain a dense, tidy form. Space approximately 80-100 cm apart when planting as a hedge.

Forms a dense, rounded shrub or small tree approximately 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, but can be kept smaller with trimming.

Trimming: Prune after flowering to shape and control size, especially when used as a hedge. Regular light trimming encourages dense, bushy growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, which may slow regrowth.

Deadheading: Not required, as spent flowers drop naturally and do not hinder future flowering.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer to support strong growth and repeat flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Murraya paniculata is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during hot or dry periods, particularly when flowering.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, scale insects, and citrus leaf miner. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot and avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risks. Prune to maintain airflow and remove any dead or yellowing foliage promptly.
