Metrosideros vitiensis Fiji Fire

Metrosideros vitiensis Fiji Fire is a vibrant, evergreen shrub known for its fiery red, brush-like flowers that appear from late spring through summer. Its compact growth habit and lush green foliage make it a versatile option for adding bold seasonal colour and structure to the garden.

Ideal for coastal, tropical, and low-maintenance gardens, Metrosideros Fiji Fire is well-suited to feature planting, borders, or container use. It performs best in full sun with free-draining soil and shows good tolerance to wind, salt spray, and dry conditions once established. Space approximately 1 to 1.2 metres apart for hedging or group plantings.

Forms a dense, rounded shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1.2 to 1.5 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and promote dense growth. Remove any dead, damaged or inward-growing branches. For formal planting or hedging, trim as needed to maintain a tidy form.

Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and encourage fresh growth.

Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils or for container plants, supplement with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.

Watering: Water regularly during the first one to two years while the plant establishes. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure soil is well-draining.

Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects and myrtle rust. Treat scale with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Inspect young growth regularly and act quickly if pests are detected.

Disease Management: Myrtle rust is the primary concern. Watch for yellow or orange powdery spores on young leaves and stems. Remove affected growth promptly and avoid overhead watering. Good airflow and well-draining soil help reduce fungal risk.
