Hydrangea Merville Sanguine

Hydrangea Merville Sanguine. Otherwise known as Hydrangea Bloody Marvellous.

Hydrangea Merville Sanguine is a captivating deciduous shrub known for its vibrant, deep red flower heads that fade to rich burgundy tones as the season progresses. Its lush, green foliage provides a striking backdrop, enhancing its appeal throughout the growing months. This versatile plant is perfect for creating dramatic accents in garden borders, cottage gardens, or mixed shrub plantings.

Thriving in partially shaded areas with moist, well-drained soil, it flourishes with consistent watering during dry spells. Space plants approximately 1.2 metres apart to allow for their natural growth. Ideal for gardens styled with a traditional or romantic theme, it also pairs beautifully with perennials or low-growing shrubs.

At maturity, Hydrangea Merville Sanguine reaches around 1.5 metres in height and spread, forming a rounded and densely flowered shrub.

To encourage Hydrangea Merville Sanguine to develop dark purple flowers as pictured, ensure your soil is slightly acidic.

  • Trimming: Remove spent flower heads in late winter or early spring, cutting back to just above a pair of healthy buds. Prune out dead or damaged stems as needed to maintain shape.
  • Deadheading: Deadhead throughout the flowering season to keep the plant looking tidy, but leave late-season blooms for winter interest.
  • Fertilising: Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in early spring, using a product tailored for hydrangeas to enhance flowering and leaf colour.
  • Watering: Hydrangeas prefer consistently moist soil. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to prevent wilting. Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Pest Control: Occasionally affected by aphids or spider mites; treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Watch for slugs and snails on young growth.
  • Disease Management: Monitor for powdery mildew, leaf spot, or root rot. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk. Treat fungal issues with an appropriate fungicide if required.
