Hydrangea macrophylla White is a deciduous shrub known for its large, rounded clusters of pure white flowers that appear from late spring through summer. The flowers sit above lush, mid-green foliage, creating a clean, classic display that brightens shaded garden areas and makes an excellent cut flower. Growing to around 1-1.5 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for cottage, woodland, formal, and coastal garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. While tolerant of morning sun, protect from harsh afternoon exposure to prevent leaf scorch. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart for good airflow and natural growth. Water regularly during dry periods and mulch annually to retain soil moisture. Prune after flowering by removing spent flower heads and thinning out old stems. A timeless, long-flowering shrub that adds softness and structure to sheltered garden spaces.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent flower heads and tidy the shape. In late winter or early spring, remove dead, damaged, or weak stems, but avoid cutting back old wood too hard, as this may reduce flowering-Hydrangea macrophylla blooms on previous season’s growth.
Deadheading: Remove faded flower heads in late winter or early spring, just above the first pair of healthy buds, to encourage vigorous new growth and flowering.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser. Apply a second light feed in early summer to support continuous growth and flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote foliage at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during dry spells and especially while establishing. Hydrangea macrophylla prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, keeping mulch clear of the stems.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free but watch for aphids and spider mites. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. Water at the base rather than overhead, and remove any diseased or discoloured foliage promptly. Plant in soil that drains well but retains moisture.
