Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Hiawatha

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Hiawatha is a striking evergreen shrub with large, ruffled scarlet-red flowers and a contrasting deep red centre, flowering continuously from spring through to autumn. Its bold colour and glossy foliage make it ideal for feature planting, warm borders, or large containers in sheltered spaces.

Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to encourage strong flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best display.

Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact form and supports repeat flowering.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering and keep the plant looking tidy.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Supplement with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the flowering season to promote strong flowering and healthy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but free-draining. Avoid overwatering or letting the soil dry out completely.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, particularly on tender new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage and use well-draining soil to help prevent root rot.
