Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Golden Queen
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Golden Queen is a vibrant evergreen shrub featuring large, ruffled golden-yellow flowers with a contrasting deep red centre. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it adds bold tropical colour to warm borders, feature plantings, or large containers in sheltered outdoor spaces.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and apply fertiliser during the growing season to support flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best effect.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Lightly trim after flowering to tidy the plant and support further flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to promote continuous flowering and improve overall appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During the flowering season, feed every two to four weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to support prolific flowering and healthy foliage.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and in warm, dry conditions. Keep soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid waterlogging and letting the soil dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Provide good airflow and avoid wetting the foliage to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves and ensure the plant is in well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
