Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Full Moon is an evergreen shrub featuring large, soft yellow flowers with a deep red centre and gently ruffled petals. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it adds a warm, tropical touch to borders, feature plantings, or large pots in sheltered areas.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed throughout the growing season to support strong flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best effect.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and stimulate strong new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact form and supports further flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to promote continuous flowering and keep the plant neat.
Fertilising: Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Supplement with a high-potassium liquid feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season to encourage abundant flowering and healthy foliage.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid both waterlogging and allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Check regularly for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, especially on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Maintain good airflow around the plant and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal problems like leaf spot. Use free-draining soil and promptly remove any yellowing or damaged foliage.
