Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Fiji Gold
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Fiji Gold is a tropical evergreen shrub known for its large, ruffled golden-yellow flowers with a rich red centre, flowering continuously from spring through to autumn. Its vibrant colouring and lush foliage make it ideal for feature planting, warm borders, or growing in large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to support flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best display.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage strong new growth. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact form and support further flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to promote continuous flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During the growing season, feed every two to four weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to enhance flowering and foliage health.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in warm, dry conditions. Keep soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become waterlogged.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow around the plant and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases like leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves and use free-draining soil to help prevent root rot.
