Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis D.J. Obrien is a vibrant evergreen shrub featuring large, ruffled orange-red flowers with a prominent red centre, flowering from spring through to autumn. Its bold tropical appearance makes it ideal for feature planting, subtropical borders, or growing in large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and apply fertiliser during the growing season to promote strong flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or individual display.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage fresh, vigorous growth. Light trimming after each flowering flush helps maintain a neat form and supports further flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During the flowering season, feed every two to four weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to support prolific flowering and healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry weather. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid both overwatering and allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid wetting the foliage to minimise the risk of fungal issues like leaf spot. Use well-draining soil and remove any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain plant health.
