Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis Crown of Bohemia is an evergreen shrub featuring large, ruffled golden-yellow flowers with a contrasting red centre, flowering from spring through to autumn. Its bold, tropical look and vibrant colour make it a standout choice for warm-climate gardens, feature planting, or large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed throughout the growing season to encourage strong flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and promote new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or as a garden focal point.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after each flowering flush helps maintain a compact habit and supports ongoing flowering.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, supplement with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the flowering season.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and in dry or hot conditions. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become waterlogged.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, especially on tender new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly and ensure the soil drains freely to prevent root rot.
