Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Agnes Galt

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Agnes Galt is a showy evergreen shrub known for its large, ruffled, pale pink flowers with a deep red centre, appearing from spring through to autumn. Its soft colouring and tropical appeal make it ideal for borders, feature planting, or growing in large containers in warm, sheltered gardens.

Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and apply fertiliser during the growing season to support strong flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for best effect.

Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a tidy appearance and can promote repeat flowering.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to support continuous flowering and keep the plant looking fresh.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, follow with a high-potassium liquid feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season.

Watering: Water consistently during establishment and through dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained, avoiding both dryness and waterlogging.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, particularly on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests appear.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal issues like leaf spot. Use well-draining soil and promptly remove any yellowing or affected leaves to maintain plant health.
