Hibiscus Red Heart

Hibiscus Red Heart is a deciduous shrub prized for its striking white, single flowers with a bold, deep red centre that appear from mid-summer to early autumn. The large, hollyhock-like flowers contrast beautifully with its dark green, lobed foliage, creating a standout feature in any sunny garden. Growing to around 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it suits cottage, subtropical, and mixed border garden styles.

Plant in full sun with well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Space plants 1.2-1.5 metres apart to allow for mature growth and airflow. Protect from strong winds and frost in cooler regions. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage strong flowering. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage strong new growth and flowering. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning late in the season, as it may reduce flowering.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to promote continuous flowering and keep the plant tidy.

Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a high-potassium fertiliser (e.g. tomato food) to support abundant blooms. Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in early spring to enrich the soil.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during establishment and in dry spells. Hibiscus ‘Red Heart’ prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil-avoid both drying out and waterlogging.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, particularly on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil at the first signs of infestation.

Disease Management: Provide good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. Remove any affected leaves promptly, and avoid overhead watering. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
