Hibiscus Lady Stanley is a deciduous shrub or small tree known for its large, double flowers in soft pink with a deeper rose-pink centre, creating a showy and romantic effect. Flowering from mid-summer through to early autumn, the blooms stand out against its mid-green, maple-like foliage. Typically reaching 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it brings a lush, tropical feel to cottage, subtropical, and mixed border garden styles.
Plant in full sun with well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Space plants 1.2-1.5 metres apart for hedging or feature planting. Protect from strong winds and hard frosts. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage bushy growth and strong flowering. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous new growth and flowering. Remove any dead, weak, or crossing branches. In colder regions, delay pruning until frost risk has passed.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to promote continued flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a high-potassium fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) to support abundant blooms. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure in early spring.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry weather and while the plant is establishing. Hibiscus prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-avoid letting it dry out completely.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Check the undersides of leaves and treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot or mildew. Avoid overhead watering and remove any diseased or yellowing foliage promptly. In wet conditions, root rot may occur if soil is poorly drained.
