Hibiscus El Capitolio
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis El Capitolio is a striking evergreen shrub known for its unique, ruffled red flowers featuring a prominent petal tuft or “flower within a flower” effect. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it adds bold tropical character to warm-climate gardens, borders, or large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Prefers regular watering and benefits from feeding during the growing season. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for hedging or feature planting.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new growth. Light trimming after each flowering flush can also help prolong the display and keep the plant compact.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, supplement with a liquid fertiliser high in potassium every two to four weeks during the flowering season.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Keep soil consistently moist but well drained. Avoid waterlogging, especially around the roots.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, especially on tender new growth. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Watch for fungal leaf spots and root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure good airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected foliage promptly. Use a well-drained soil mix to reduce disease risk.
