Hibiscus El Capitolio Sport
Notify MeHibiscus rosa-sinensis El Capitolio Sport is a tropical evergreen shrub producing distinctive ruffled apricot and peach-coloured variegated flowers with a unique “flower within a flower” form. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it brings bold colour and an exotic look to warm, sheltered gardens or large containers.
Plant in full sun with rich, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed during the growing season to support flowering. Protect from frost and cold winds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart when used in borders or as a feature.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and promote strong new growth. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a tidy form and encourages more flowers.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage ongoing flowering and improve the plant’s overall appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, follow with a high-potassium liquid feed every two to four weeks during the flowering season.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in hot or dry conditions. Keep soil evenly moist but well drained to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Watch for common pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Use well-drained soil and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly to keep the plant healthy.
