Grewia Lavender Star
Notify MeGrewia occidentalis Lavender Star is a semi-deciduous shrub admired for its distinctive star-shaped lavender flowers that appear from late spring through to autumn. The flowers are followed by small, reddish-brown fruits, while the glossy, serrated green leaves provide a lush backdrop throughout the growing season.
Ideal for subtropical, cottage, and wildlife-friendly gardens, Grewia Lavender Star is perfect for borders, screens, or feature planting. It grows best in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Space approximately 1 to 1.5 metres apart for informal hedging or mixed beds.
Forms a rounded, multi-stemmed shrub reaching around 2 to 3 metres high and 2 metres wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage a bushy habit. Remove any dead, damaged or straggly growth as needed. It can be clipped more firmly if used as a hedge or informal screen.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers to prolong the flowering period and maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. In poorer soils, a slow-release fertiliser in early spring can support strong growth and repeat flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will flower more freely with consistent moisture during dry spells. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally check for aphids or scale on new growth. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good drainage and airflow to prevent fungal issues such as powdery mildew. Prune out and dispose of any affected plant material promptly.
