Gordonia Moonlight Magic
Gordonia 'Moonlight Magic' is a striking evergreen tree or large shrub valued for its deep burgundy-purple foliage and large, camellia-like white flowers with golden centres. Flowering from late summer into autumn, the blooms contrast beautifully against the dark leaves, providing bold seasonal interest. With a naturally upright, narrow habit reaching around 3-4 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it’s ideal for feature planting in subtropical, contemporary, or woodland-style gardens.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, free-draining, acidic soil. Space at least 1.5-2 metres apart if planting near other trees or structures. Protect from harsh frost and drying winds, especially when young. Mulch annually to retain moisture and enrich the soil. Prune lightly after flowering if needed to maintain shape. A beautiful, low-maintenance choice for year-round foliage colour and late-season flowers.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can affect flowering. This cultivar naturally maintains a tidy, upright form.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as flowers drop cleanly. However, removing fallen blooms from around the base can help reduce mess and discourage pests.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support healthy foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Gordonia ‘Moonlight Magic’ is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture in dry periods. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but watch for occasional aphids or scale. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soils to prevent root rot and fungal leaf spot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly, and mulch annually to retain moisture-keeping mulch clear of the trunk.
