Gardenia radicans
Gardenia radicans is a delightful, low-growing evergreen shrub that is adored for its petite size, glossy green foliage, and heavenly-scented flowers. This variety produces a proliferation of star-shaped, white flowers from late spring into summer, filling the garden with a sweet, captivating aroma. Radicans thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, acidic soil. It's a compact shrub, typically reaching a height of around 50 cm with a spread of 1-1.5 metres upon maturity, perfect for ground cover or rock gardens.
Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy shape and remove any leggy or damaged growth. Avoid hard pruning unless necessary, as this can reduce next season’s flowers.
Deadheading: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage continued flowering.
Fertilising: Feed in spring and again in late summer with an acid-loving fertiliser to support healthy green foliage and strong flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, and during extended dry periods, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Pest control: Watch for common pests such as aphids, scale, mealybug, and whitefly, which may cause sticky residue, sooty mould, or distorted growth. Treat with horticultural oil or an appropriate insect spray, ensuring good coverage of leaf undersides.
Disease management: Gardenia radicans can be prone to root rot in poorly drained soils and leaf yellowing caused by nutrient deficiency or soil that is too alkaline. Improve drainage where needed, avoid overwatering, and use an acidifying fertiliser or iron chelate if yellowing occurs.
