Francoa appendiculata

Francoa appendiculata, commonly known as bridal wreath, is a clump-forming evergreen perennial native to Chile, valued for its tall, slender spikes of soft pink, cup-shaped flowers with deeper veining. Flowering from mid-summer to early autumn, the blooms rise above rosettes of deeply lobed, dark green foliage, adding vertical interest and a soft, romantic touch to shaded borders. Typically grows 60-90 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, making it well-suited to woodland, cottage, and partially shaded garden styles.

Plant in partial shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Tolerates full sun in cooler climates if soil remains consistently moist. Space plants 40-50 cm apart for airflow and natural clump development. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage tidy growth. A graceful, long-flowering perennial ideal for softening mixed borders and attracting pollinators.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems to the base after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage energy back into the foliage. In late winter or early spring, remove any dead or damaged leaves.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flowers can prolong the flowering season and improve appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a light liquid feed during flowering can help support healthy growth and more blooms.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Francoa appendiculata prefers moist but well-drained soil. Mulch annually to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs and snails may occasionally feed on young leaves-use organic controls if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal problems. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly, and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of leaf spot or rot. Ensure the soil remains moist but not soggy.
