Dichroa Summer Skies

Dichroa 'Summer Skies' is a striking, deciduous shrub prized for its lush foliage and showy clusters of hydrangea-like flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. The blooms are typically vibrant blue in acidic soils and pink in more alkaline conditions, offering a similar pH-dependent colour change as traditional hydrangeas. With a bushy habit reaching approximately 1.2-1.5 metres high and wide, it brings a tropical feel to woodland, cottage, and shaded courtyard garden styles.

Plant in partial shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. Water regularly during dry periods and apply mulch annually to conserve soil moisture. Protect from heavy frost and prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Acidic soil enhances blue tones in the flowers; apply soil conditioners if needed to influence colour.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead, damaged, or spindly growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as it flowers on the previous season’s wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and support fresh growth. This can also help reduce unwanted self-seeding.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In acidic soil, a high-potassium feed can encourage more vibrant flowering and help maintain healthy foliage.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. Dichroa ‘Summer Skies’ prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-avoid both waterlogging and drought stress.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids or scale may occasionally appear. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of powdery mildew or leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected foliage promptly. Plant in free-draining soil and mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
