Cytisus praecox

Cytisus praecox is a deciduous shrub admired for its profuse early spring flowering, producing masses of soft creamy-yellow, pea-like flowers along arching green stems. One of the first shrubs to flower as the seasons shift, it brings light and movement to the garden before many other plants emerge. With a graceful form reaching 1-1.5 metres high and wide, it is well suited to coastal, Mediterranean, cottage, or low-maintenance garden styles.

Thrives in full sun and prefers light, sandy, well-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and best planted where it can spread freely. Space 1-1.2 metres apart in open borders or on slopes for erosion control. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.

Trimming: Lightly trim immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not reshoot.

Deadheading: Not required, as this plant self-cleans and produces flowers in abundance. Trimming after flowering effectively removes spent blooms.

Fertilising: Cytisus generally thrives in poor soils and doesn't require regular feeding. If growth is weak, apply a light, balanced fertiliser in early spring.

Watering: Water during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods, but once established, this shrub is drought-tolerant and prefers free-draining soil.

Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests. Monitor young plants for aphids in spring and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal issues.
