Cotoneaster dammeri Skogholm
Notify MeCotoneaster dammeri Skogholm is a low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves, small white flowers in late spring, and bright red berries in autumn that attract birds. Its dense, trailing habit makes it ideal for groundcover, banks, retaining walls, and wildlife-friendly gardens.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates drought, frost, and coastal conditions once established. Requires minimal maintenance, though light pruning can help control spread. Space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart for groundcover use.
Spreads up to 2 metres wide and grows to around 30 to 50 centimetres tall.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and control spread. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a tidy, low-growing form.
Deadheading: Not required. Decorative red berries follow flowering and can be left for visual interest and to attract birds.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils, an additional light feed in mid-summer may support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and spider mites, especially in hot, dry conditions. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of fire blight and leaf spot. Remove affected branches promptly and dispose of them. Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk. Use well-drained soil to prevent root issues.
