Cotoneaster adpressus is a low-growing, deciduous shrub valued for its dense, spreading habit and seasonal interest. Tiny white flowers appear in late spring, followed by bright red berries in autumn that persist into winter, attracting birds. Its small, rounded green leaves turn attractive shades of red and purple before falling. Growing to around 30-40 cm high and spreading 1.5-2 metres wide, it’s ideal for ground cover, slopes, or cascading over walls in cottage, wildlife-friendly, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart for effective coverage. Drought-tolerant once established and tolerant of urban pollution and poor soils. Requires little maintenance-light pruning after fruiting can be done to control spread or shape. An excellent choice for erosion control and year-round ornamental value.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy, spreading form. Remove any dead, damaged, or overly congested stems. It can also be trimmed after berrying to control size or shape.
Deadheading: Not necessary. Flowers are followed by attractive red berries, which are a key ornamental feature and provide winter interest.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a light mulch of compost or well-rotted manure can be added in autumn.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Cotoneaster adpressus is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and scale insects, particularly in warm or sheltered spots. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Good airflow helps prevent fireblight and powdery mildew, both of which can affect Cotoneaster. Avoid overhead watering, and prune out any affected branches promptly. Clean pruning tools to avoid spreading disease.
