Chaenomeles Green Ice

Chaenomeles Green Ice, commonly known as flowering quince, is a distinctive and attractive deciduous shrub, prized for its unique green-tinged white flowers and vibrant green foliage. This cultivar produces an abundance of flowers in early spring, with its delicate, pale greenish-white flowers creating a refreshing and eye-catching display. The glossy green leaves emerge after the flowers, adding a lush backdrop to the floral show.

Ideal for mixed borders, hedges, and as a specimen plant, Chaenomeles Green Ice thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including poor or clay soils, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings. This shrub is also notable for its thorny branches, which can provide an excellent natural barrier or wildlife habitat. Space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for adequate air circulation and room for growth.

At maturity, Chaenomeles Green Ice reaches a height and spread of about 1.8 metres. Its compact, rounded growth habit and unusual green-tinged white flowers add unique texture and seasonal interest to garden landscapes. This cultivar enhances any garden with its early spring flowers and reliable performance, offering a refreshing and vibrant display each year.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and thin out overcrowded areas to improve air circulation and encourage flowering.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent waterlogging. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of fungal diseases such as leaf spot and fire blight. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and apply appropriate fungicides if necessary. Remove and dispose of any infected plant material promptly.
