Camellia Quintessence

Camellia 'Quintessence' is a rare and charming miniature, ground-hugging camellia with a graceful, spreading habit and lightly fragrant, white, semi-double flowers. Blooming from late winter through early spring, the delicate blooms contrast beautifully with its glossy, dark green foliage. Naturally low and trailing, it typically grows 30-50 cm high and spreads up to 1.5 metres, making it ideal for cascading over walls, edging shaded paths, or spilling from large containers in woodland, formal, or shaded courtyard garden styles.

Plant in partial to full shade with free-draining, acidic, humus-rich soil. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart for ground cover use. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to shape or manage spread. A unique camellia perfect for adding subtle beauty to shaded, sheltered garden areas.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy, compact shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This low-growing, spreading variety requires minimal pruning but can be gently shaped if needed.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent blooms can improve appearance and reduce the risk of petal blight or fungal issues.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. A second light feed in mid-summer can support healthy foliage and bud development. Avoid lime or alkaline fertilisers.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. Camellia ‘Quintessence’ prefers moist, free-draining, acidic soil. Mulch with pine bark or leaf litter to retain moisture and keep roots cool, avoiding contact with the stem.

Pest Control: Watch for scale insects, aphids, and mites. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Check the undersides of leaves regularly.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal problems such as leaf spot and petal blight. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any diseased or fallen flowers and foliage promptly. Plant in well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
