Buxus Freedom - Ground Ball
A refined choice for structured planting, Buxus microphylla Freedom offers dense, glossy green foliage and a naturally compact habit that makes it ideal for low hedging, topiary, and formal garden designs. Known for its improved resistance to pests and diseases compared to traditional varieties, Freedom is a low-maintenance option for shaping and clipping, holding its form well throughout the year.
Perfect for creating crisp edges, structured pathways, or container displays, this variety suits formal, contemporary, and coastal gardens. Plant in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Space 30–40 cm apart for hedging to achieve a dense, uniform look.
Mature size: Forms a tight, rounded shrub reaching approximately 1 metre high and wide when untrimmed.

Trimming: Trim lightly in late spring to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. For hedging, clip two to three times during the growing season, finishing by late summer to avoid frost-damaged new growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Buxus is grown for foliage rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which can cause soft growth more susceptible to pests and disease.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Ensure soil remains moist but not waterlogged, particularly in containers.
Pest Control: Watch for Buxus leafminer and psyllid. Signs include puckered or distorted leaves and internal tunnelling. Treat with horticultural oil or a suitable systemic insecticide if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Susceptible to Buxus blight and root rot. Look for blackened leaves, defoliation, or dark streaks on stems. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected material promptly. Use a fungicide if blight is confirmed.
