Buxus microphylla Fastigiata is an upright, narrow-growing form of Japanese Box, prized for its dense, fine-textured foliage and naturally columnar shape. Its vertical growth makes it an excellent choice for adding height and structure to garden designs without taking up much space. The small, glossy green leaves maintain their colour year-round, offering reliable evergreen form with minimal pruning.

Perfect for entrances, narrow borders, or container planting, this cultivar suits formal, Mediterranean, and urban garden styles.

Plant in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Allow 40–50 cm spacing when planted in rows to highlight its vertical structure.

Mature size: Upright and compact, typically growing to 1.5 metres tall and 50 cm wide.

Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain its distinctive upright, columnar form. A second trim in late summer may be done for formal uses, but avoid pruning too close to autumn to protect new growth from frost damage.

Deadheading: Not required, as this plant is cultivated for its foliage rather than flowers.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy, compact growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can lead to leggy or uneven form.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells. Ensure excellent drainage, particularly in clay soils or containers, to prevent root-related issues.

Pest Control: Monitor for Buxus psyllid and leafminer—signs include blistered, puckered, or tunneled leaves. Treat with horticultural oil or a systemic insecticide if infestations are detected.

Disease Management: Vulnerable to Buxus blight and root rot. Look for blackened or dropping leaves and streaks on stems. Improve air circulation, avoid wetting foliage, and promptly remove any infected material. Use a fungicide if symptoms persist.
