Buxus Independence
Buxus microphylla Independence is a hardy, compact evergreen valued for its dense, fine-textured foliage and strong resistance to disease. With its tidy, rounded form and vibrant green leaves that hold colour throughout the year, Independence is ideal for shaping into low hedges, geometric forms, or container displays with minimal maintenance.
A versatile choice for structured borders, clipped forms, and foundation planting, this cultivar suits formal, contemporary, and coastal gardens.
Thrives in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. For hedging, space 30–40 cm apart to develop a full, uniform line.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 1 metre high and wide, maintaining a compact, rounded form with light pruning.

Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to shape and encourage dense branching. For hedging or formal borders, a second trim in late summer will help maintain structure. Avoid trimming after early autumn to prevent frost damage to new growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this cultivar is grown for its evergreen foliage, not for flowers.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support compact, healthy growth. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can lead to soft, weak shoots.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during extended dry periods. Ensure soil is well-drained to prevent root issues, especially when grown in containers.
Pest Control: Watch for signs of Buxus psyllid and leafminer, such as distorted or cupped leaves. Use horticultural oil or a systemic insecticide if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Susceptible to Buxus blight and root rot. Symptoms include blackened leaves, rapid defoliation, and dark streaks on stems. Promote airflow, avoid overhead watering, and promptly remove any infected material. Apply a fungicide if blight is identified.
