A strikingly vertical cultivar, Buxus sempervirens Graham Blandy stands out with its upright, columnar form and dense, dark green foliage. Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Allow 50–60 cm spacing if planting in groups, though its naturally narrow form makes it perfect for tight spots.
Mature size: Grows upright to around 2 metres tall and just 50 cm wide, maintaining its columnar habit with minimal shaping.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain its naturally narrow, upright form. For formal shapes or specimen use, a second light trim in late summer can help maintain tidy vertical growth without encouraging excessive soft tips before winter.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this plant is valued for its evergreen foliage.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid overfeeding, especially with high-nitrogen products, as this can promote leggy growth and reduce form definition.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Water during dry spells, particularly in summer or if grown in pots, but avoid overwatering.
Pest Control: Monitor for psyllids and Buxus leafminers—distorted or blistered foliage may indicate an issue. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil as needed.
Disease Management: Buxus blight and root rot are the primary concerns. Look for signs such as leaf drop, black lesions, or stem dieback. Ensure good drainage, improve airflow around the plant, and remove infected material. Apply a fungicide if symptoms persist.
