Buddleia Lochinch

Buddleia Lochinch is a compact, deciduous shrub known for its softly felted, silver-grey foliage and fragrant conical flower spikes in a striking shade of lavender-blue with orange eyes. Flowering from mid-Summer into early Autumn, it is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Well-suited to mixed borders, wildlife-friendly areas, and sunny, low-maintenance gardens, it complements cottage, Mediterranean, and pollinator-focused garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Prune back hard in early Spring to maintain shape and promote abundant flowering. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart for healthy airflow and growth.

Mature size: Compact and upright, typically reaching 1.5–2m tall and 1.2–1.5m wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back last season’s flowering stems to a low framework (about 30–50 cm from the ground) to encourage strong new shoots and better flowering. Remove any dead or damaged wood at the same time.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes regularly through summer to prolong the flowering period and prevent unwanted self-seeding.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. In poor soils, apply a second light feed after the first flush of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Buddleja ‘Lochinch’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods for best performance.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for aphids on young shoots—treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if infestations appear.

Disease Management: Prune to maintain good air circulation and avoid crowding. Powdery mildew can occur in humid or poorly ventilated conditions—remove affected leaves and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if needed. Avoid overhead watering.
