Brunfelsia pauciflora

Brunfelsia pauciflora is a striking evergreen shrub admired for its richly perfumed, violet to lavender and white flowers that appear from late spring through summer. Often called "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", its flowers change colour over several days, creating a multi-toned effect against dark green, glossy foliage.

Ideal for subtropical, cottage, and scented gardens, Brunfelsia pauciflora works well in borders, as a feature shrub, or in large containers. It prefers part shade with protection from harsh afternoon sun, moist but free-draining soil, and benefits from regular feeding. Space approximately 1 to 1.5 metres apart in mixed plantings.

Forms a rounded, bushy shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2.5 metres high and 1.5 to 2 metres wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead, weak or crossing branches as needed. Hard pruning can be done in early spring if rejuvenation is required.

Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers to encourage repeat flowering and keep the plant looking tidy.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. For best results, use one formulated for flowering shrubs to support strong bloom production and healthy foliage.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods and while the plant is establishing. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but do not allow it to become waterlogged. Mulching helps retain soil moisture.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, whitefly and spider mites, particularly on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and encourage natural predators where possible.

Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Yellowing leaves and stunted growth may indicate an issue. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Maintain airflow around the plant to prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. Remove and dispose of any affected foliage promptly.
