Brachyglottis monroi is a compact, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, recognised for its leathery olive-green foliage edged with bronze tones and cheerful yellow daisy-like flowers from late Spring to early Summer. Its dense, rounded form and year-round colour make it a valuable structural and ornamental plant.
Well-suited to rockeries, borders, or coastal plantings, it complements native, cottage, and dry-tolerant garden styles.
Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Hardy to wind and drought once established, it performs well in poor or stony soils. Space plants 60–80cm apart for compact coverage.
Mature size: Dome-shaped and dense, typically growing to 60–80cm tall and wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and maintain a dense, compact habit. Remove any leggy, damaged, or wayward stems. Older plants can be refreshed with a moderate prune in early spring, but avoid cutting into leafless, woody stems.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads after flowering improves appearance and may encourage a tidier, more vigorous plant.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. A light top-up in mid-summer can support continued healthy growth in poor soils. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers to prevent soft, leggy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Brachyglottis monroi is moderately drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional deep watering in extended dry spells. Ensure soil is free-draining to avoid root issues.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, particularly on young plants, and manage with bait or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Remove any yellowing or dead foliage to reduce the risk of fungal problems and maintain airflow. Avoid overhead watering where possible, especially in humid conditions.
