Boronia megastigma Purple Jared is a standout cultivar known for its intensely fragrant flowers and rich colouration. Flowering from early to mid-Spring, it produces deep burgundy, cup-shaped flowers with glowing yellow interiors. The fine, aromatic green foliage enhances its appeal, while the plant’s powerful citrus-like scent makes it a favourite for sensory planting.
Ideal for pots, borders, or near paths and entrances where its fragrance can be enjoyed, it suits cottage, native, and informal garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Protect from strong winds and avoid root disturbance. Space plants 0.8–1m apart to maintain shape and encourage airflow.
Mature size: Compact and tidy, growing to around 60–80cm tall and 40–60cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a neat, bushy form and encourage healthy new growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as Boronias often fail to reshoot from older stems.
Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flowers can enhance appearance and may modestly extend flowering if growing conditions are favourable.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser suitable for Australian natives. A second, lighter feed in late summer may benefit overall vigour. Avoid high-phosphorus products, which can harm the roots.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and dry periods. ‘Purple Jared’ prefers well-drained but consistently damp soil—mulch with pine bark or leaf litter to retain moisture, taking care not to mound mulch against the base of the plant.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for aphids and caterpillars on fresh growth. Treat early with insecticidal soap or native-friendly pest controls if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot if drainage is poor. Ensure free-draining soil and avoid overwatering. Sudden dieback can occur due to stress or fungal issues—maintain good airflow with light pruning and minimise root disturbance to keep the plant healthy.
