Boronia megastigma

Boronia megastigma is a compact, aromatic shrub prized for its highly fragrant, cup-shaped flowers, deep brown on the outside with a striking yellow interior. Flowering from early to mid-Spring, this Western Australian native is well-known for its intense citrus-like perfume, making it a favourite for sensory and fragrant gardens. Its fine, deep green foliage adds soft texture year-round.

Excellent for planting near entrances, patios, or pathways, it suits native, cottage, and sensory garden styles.

Plant in partial shade with moist, free-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Avoid root disturbance and protect from strong winds or extreme heat. Space plants 0.8–1m apart to allow for airflow and compact growth.

Mature size: Compact and bushy, typically reaching 60–100cm tall and 40–60cm wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune immediately after flowering to maintain a compact, upright form and encourage new growth. Avoid cutting into old, woody stems, as Boronia megastigma resents hard pruning and may not recover well.

Deadheading: Not essential, but spent flowers can be gently removed to tidy the plant and may slightly improve appearance and flowering consistency.

Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser for native plants in early spring. A light top-up feed in late summer may help maintain vigour. Avoid high-phosphorus products, which can damage sensitive root systems.

Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially during establishment and in dry spells. Soil must be free-draining yet moist—mulch with pine bark or leaf litter to retain moisture and maintain root health, keeping mulch clear of the base.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free, though aphids or mites may occasionally target new growth. Use insecticidal soap or a gentle native-safe treatment if necessary.

Disease Management: Very susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Sudden dieback is common if roots are disturbed or stressed—plant in a sheltered, stable environment and minimise root disturbance. Light pruning helps maintain airflow and reduce fungal pressure.
