Boronia heterophylla is a striking evergreen shrub native to Western Australia, best known for its fragrant, rose-pink, bell-shaped flowers that appear from mid to late Spring. The fine, glossy green foliage contrasts beautifully with the vibrant flowering display, and the plant emits a pleasant citrusy aroma when brushed.
A beautiful addition to sensory gardens, mixed borders, or near pathways where its scent can be appreciated, it suits native, cottage, and informal garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Protect from strong winds and avoid waterlogged conditions. Space plants approximately 1–1.2m apart to allow for natural form and airflow.
Mature size: Upright and lightly open, growing to around 1.5–2m tall and 1–1.2m wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as boronias can be sensitive and may not reshoot well from hard cuts.
Deadheading: Not typically required, but spent flowers can be gently removed to improve appearance and reduce seed formation, encouraging further flowering in some conditions.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser suitable for native plants. Avoid high-phosphorus blends, which can damage the roots. A light top-up feed in late summer may help maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment period and during dry spells, especially in summer. Boronias prefer evenly moist, well-drained soil—avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but also prevent waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally low in pest issues, but inspect occasionally for aphids or caterpillars, particularly around new growth. Use a gentle insecticidal soap or native-plant-safe treatment if required.
Disease Management: Boronias are prone to root rot if drainage is poor. Plant in free-draining soil and avoid overwatering. Sudden dieback may also occur—ensure good air circulation and avoid disturbing the root zone. Mulch lightly with organic material, keeping it clear of the crown to prevent rot.
