Berberis Rosy Glow

Berberis thunbergii Rosy Glow is a striking deciduous shrub known for its marbled foliage in shades of rose-pink, cream, and deep burgundy. Its colourful leaves provide year-round interest, intensifying in autumn before falling. Small yellow spring flowers are followed by bright red berries in autumn, which attract birds and add seasonal texture.

Ideal for cottage, formal, and low-maintenance gardens, it works well as a feature shrub, in mixed borders, or as a colourful low hedge.

Thrives in full sun for the best foliage colour, and prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Drought tolerant once established. Space plants approximately 60 cm apart for hedging or 75 cm for individual placement.

Mature size: Grows 90–120 cm high and wide with a naturally rounded, compact form.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Lightly trim to shape, remove dead or damaged wood, and thin out congested growth. For hedging, a light summer trim will help maintain density and form.

Deadheading: Not required, as Berberis is grown for its foliage, form, and berries rather than prolonged flowering. Spent flowers will naturally give way to ornamental berries.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, an additional mid-summer feed may benefit younger plants or hedges.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Berberis is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and scale insects can occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spot in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected foliage. Apply a fungicide if symptoms persist.
