Berberis Atropurpurea
Berberis Atropurpurea is a striking deciduous shrub known for its deep-purple foliage, which intensifies in colour through the warmer months before shifting to rich reds in autumn. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, offering a charming contrast against the dark foliage, followed by red berries that attract birds. Its spiny branches and dense habit make it an excellent option for hedging or barrier planting.
Perfect for adding bold foliage colour to mixed borders, structured plantings, or wildlife-friendly gardens. It complements cottage, contemporary and woodland garden styles.
Best planted in full sun to partial shade, in well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established. For a dense hedge space plants 3 per metre or allow room to showcase its natural form in open settings.
Reaches a mature height of approx. 1.5m with a similar spread, forming a compact, rounded shrub.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape, especially when grown as a hedge or barrier. Remove any dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring.
Deadheading: Not required, but you may remove spent flowers if preferred for tidiness. Leave berries to support birdlife.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods. Once established, Berberis is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.
Pest Control: Keep an eye out for aphids and scale insects, particularly in warm, dry weather. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap as needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew and rust. Look for white, powdery patches or orange spots on leaves. Improve air circulation by thinning overcrowded stems and avoid overhead watering. Treat with a fungicide if necessary.
