Berberidopsis corallina, commonly known as Coral Plant, is a rare, evergreen climber native to Chile, admired for its striking, coral-red, bell-shaped flowers that appear from late spring into early summer. The flowers hang delicately among leathery, heart-shaped green leaves, creating an unusual and ornamental display. This twining climber is perfect for adding vertical interest in sheltered, shaded areas.
Ideal for woodland, shaded courtyard, or collector’s gardens, it adds exotic charm when grown over pergolas, trellises, or large shrubs for support.
Thrives in part to full shade and prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Protect from strong winds and harsh sunlight. Space well from other climbers to highlight its unique flowering.
Mature size: Reaches 2–3 metres high with a softly twining spread.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape and control the size of this scrambling climber. Remove any dead, damaged, or tangled stems to encourage healthy, bushy growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as regrowth can be slow.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flowers can tidy the plant and may promote further flowering in favourable conditions.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In containers or poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed monthly during the growing season to support flowering and foliage health.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during dry periods and establishment. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young growth may occasionally attract aphids or caterpillars. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations appear.
Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove any affected leaves promptly and apply a fungicide if needed.
